On-Grid Solar Systems
An on-grid (grid-tied) system works in parallel with the utility network. It is the simplest solar configuration because it does not need batteries, and is a common choice where the grid is reasonably stable.
How it works
- Panels generate DC power; a grid-tie inverter converts it to AC.
- Your site uses solar power first and the grid tops up any shortfall.
- Where permitted and approved, surplus can be exported under the utility arrangement in force.
- For safety, grid-tie inverters shut down if the grid fails, unless the system is hybrid.
Where it is used
- Homes with stable grid supply
- Offices and shops
- Factories with daytime loads
- Institutions
Benefits
- Lower system cost than battery-based options
- Minimal maintenance
- Efficient use of generated energy
- Simple, proven technology
Things to consider
- No backup during grid outages (unless hybrid)
- Net-metering or export rules and approvals, which are set by the regulator and your DISCO and can change
- Meter and connection requirements
- Accurate sizing against your load
Our engineering approach
- Inverter and array matching for your site
- Protection and anti-islanding settings
- Documentation support for grid approvals
- Commissioning and monitoring setup
Frequently asked questions
Will my on-grid system work during load-shedding?
A standard grid-tie system switches off when the grid is down. If you need power during outages, a hybrid system is the better fit.
Do you help with net-metering paperwork?
We can guide the documentation process. Current rules and timelines are decided by the authorities, so we confirm the latest requirements with you.
